"David Akers has retained his job and will serve as the 49ers kicker in Saturday's playoff opener against the Green Bay Packers, coach Jim Harbaugh announced after practice Thursday.

"He gives us our best chance to win," Harbaugh said in opening his press conference.

The 49ers signed Billy Cundiff on Jan. 1 to compete in practice with Akers, and Cundiff will remain on the team, although he likely won't suit up Saturday."
